Apoptosis and necrosis mediate skeletal muscle fiber loss in age-induced mitochondrial enzymatic abnormalities

mtDNA deletion mutations are causal in sarcopenia, and are concomitant with electron transport chain abnormalities, causing apoptotic mechanisms to activate, and cell necrosis.
